THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH AT VHS

Englisch, über viele Jahrzehnte die größte an vhs unterrichtete Sprache, erlebt seit einigen Jahren einschneidende Veränderungen: Die Teilnehmendenzahlen an vhs-Englischkursen betragen deutschlandweit heute nur noch etwa 60 % der Zahlen von vor zehn Jahren. Im gleichen Zeitraum wuchs der Bedarf an Fremdsprachen laut einer aktuellen Studie des Bundesinstituts für Berufliche Bildung jedoch um gut 19%. Festzuhalten ist ferner, dass Englisch heute weltweit von weit mehr Nichtmuttersprachler*innen als Muttersprachler*innen gesprochen wird. Was bedeutet das alles für das Lehren und Lernen der Sprache? Welches Englisch sollten wir an Volkshochschulen unterrichten? Macht es noch Sinn, etwa an British-American English festzuhalten? Diese und ähnliche Fragen diskutieren wir in zwei sich ergänzenden, aber auch einzeln buchbaren Veranstaltungen und geben Ihnen neben Anregungen auch reichlich Arbeitsmaterialien für Ihren Unterricht mit.

Workshop 2: Same old, same old - or new Profiles, Target Groups, Content?

This highly interactive online workshop builds on the previous one but can also be booked separately.

In addition to the question ‘Are we teaching the right things?’, we will also take a closer look at possible answers from a recent study by the British Council (2023)* and the Companion Volume to the CEFR (2020), which questions traditional ‘native speaker standards’, proposes multilingual and multicultural skills as current learning objectives, and replaces the traditional four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking with four modes of communication: reception, production, interaction and mediation.

Mediation in particular offers new topics for language teaching and added value. How can we translate these options into interesting courses for our learners? And how can we motivate, in particular, young adults to enrol in English courses offered by the vhs? Come along and find out.
